CERTIFICATE OF PURITY AND THERAPEUTIC GRADE STATUS
The purity of an essential oil is its most important characteristic. An essential oil that is not pure is a great risk of incorporating germs, heavy metals and adulterants into the body, which can cause irritation, adverse effects and even illness.
Due to the lack of quality control, dōTERRA® created its own testing protocol called the CPTG, Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade, or Certificate of Therapeutic Grade Purity and Status.
This protocol certificatr the absence, in essential oils, of synthetic ingredients, harmful pollutants and other harmful elements, ensuring the power, purity and consistency of all production batches.
The CPTG protocol begins immediately after the distillation of each oil, with the examination of its chemical composition. A second round of tests is carried out in the production unit, to ensure that the oil received is the same as that distilled and tested. The third chemical check of the oil is carried out through a three-stage procedure, with the oils packaged for consumers.
Each of these tests affirms that the essential oil is free of contaminants and unexpected alterations during the production process.
How are Essential Oils used?
The methods of application of essential oils have evolved, as continuous research allows a better understanding of the methods of use. In doTERRA there are three different methods: Aromatic, Topical and Internal.
When an essential oil is used properly, there are no risks in any of these application methods. They can be used individually or in combination for emotional and physical well-being.
The great variety of individual oils and mixtures can be used one by one or combined, always checking in the Reference Guide which is the correct application method.
Essential oils are rapidly perceived by olfactory receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system and can provoke powerful physiological, mental and emotional responses, simply by perceiving an aroma.
The limbic system is part of the brain in which a wide variety of functions are developed, including smell, emotions, behavior, and memory. For this reason, essential oils have an especially powerful effect through aromatic application.
Diffusing an essential oil aromatically is one of the simplest methods of inducing the uplifting, calming or stimulating effects of essential oils. The best tool to achieve this is to use diffusers that use cold air or water, such as the doTERRA petal diffuser. Another easier and more practical way to enjoy its benefits is by placing a few drops directly on the hands, rubbing them and bringing them to the nose to breathe deeply its delicate aroma.
Additional aromatic uses:
- Apply a few drops to a cotton swab and place it in the air holes of your vehicle
- Mix the oils in a spray bottle and fill with water to spray on furniture, carpets or bedding
- Add a few drops of oil in the washing machine before finishing the drying process
- Use it to clean household surfaces.
Essential oils have low molecular weights and are soluble in lipids, meaning that they easily penetrate the skin and once absorbed, remain in the applied area for a localized benefit, which is why it is a very effective method to apply them.
Although essential oils are easily absorbed, there are many ways to increase their absorption by topical use. Through light massage, the blood flow in the area of application is increased and the distribution of the oil throughout the body is improved. In the case of dry or scaly skin, you can support yourself with a carrier oil such as doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil, as they help moisturize the skin, slow the evaporation of the oil and increase absorption.
For topical application on young or sensitive skin, it is advisable to use a carrier oil to dilute the more powerful oils or when using an oil for the first time to avoid sensitivities and redness. The recommended dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil.
It is recommended to start with low doses (1-2 drops) and repeat during the day every 4-6 hours as needed, instead of applying a single large dose. Topical use doses may vary for each individual depending on size, age, and general health status.
Suggested areas to apply essential oils:
- Temples and nape of the neck
- Chest and abdomen
- Arms, legs and soles of feet
Other effective methods of topical application
- Add a few drops of oil during a hot bath
- Add a few drops of oil on a damp towel to create a hot or cold compress and then apply it to the desired area
- Add a few drops of oil to a lotion or moisturizer and then apply it to the skin
Sensitive areas to avoid:
- Some facial surfaces such as the eye area
- Eyes and inner ear canal
- Areas of skin with wounds or sensitivity.
Certain essential oils have a huge culinary history and can be used with everyday foods to obtain their benefits, as well as aromatic properties in foods. Every time you make a cup of mint or spaghetti tea with fresh basil, you'll be enjoying the plant compounds contained in the essential oils.
Internal use is a very safe and effective method of application. Due to the sophisticated physiological processes in the human body, each time essential oils are ingested, they enter directly into the bloodstream through the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported through the rest of the body, and are easily absorbed by all organs of the body, including the brain, then metabolized by the liver and other organs before being evacuated.
The composition of essential oils is highly complex, each component possessing a unique set of biochemical properties that react in different ways with cells and organs. Although these mechanisms of action are not fully understood, the end results have been shown to be positive, however, the body is only equipped to handle appropriate doses of essential oils.
To find out which essential oils are for internal use, consult the Reference Guide and follow the recommended dosage according to the specifications on the label. It is suggested that you consult with a health professional before consumption.
Effective methods of internal application
- Replace fresh or dried herbs and spices with essential oils in cooking and baking recipes. Remember that essential oils are much more potent, so start with a very small amount
- For more potent oils, administer the dose with a toothpick (dip the end of a clean toothpick into the oil and then add to the food)
- Add a few drops of essential oil to water, smoothies, milk, tea or other drinks to add flavour
- Add a couple of drops of essential oil in a vegetable capsule before consumption
- Add a small amount of essential oil to applesauce or yogurt.
Cold pressure extraction
The distillation of essential oils is an art in perfect harmony with modern scientific work, with its techniques and technologies.
That is why the aromatic compounds that make up Essential Oils are substances full of attributes capable of providing health and well-being.
